Microchip Technology Inc. has announced an open source tool for immediate production, managing the Adaptec® Intelligent Storage HBA, SmartHBA and SmartRAID family of OpenStack data centers, making it the first company in the industry to address these challenges.
Open source tools for market-leading OpenStack cloud management software simplify the configuration, deployment, and management of storage resources.
Public cloud and private cloud infrastructure vendors are simplifying the configuration, deployment, and management of server storage platforms with open source tools. But so far, they have faced many challenges in developing their own storage management adapters and embedded solutions for the tool management platform. Microchip Technology Inc. has announced an open source tool for immediate production, managing the Adaptec® Intelligent Storage HBA, SmartHBA and SmartRAID family of OpenStack data centers, making it the first company in the industry to address these challenges.
By investing in and releasing easy-to-deploy open source tools and plug-ins, Microchip has eliminated the complexity of the Adaptec family of storage controller solutions that connect storage resources to heterogeneous data centers driven by OpenStack. Pre-certified and tested, Adaptec intelligent storage tools are scalable and customizable, simplifying the management of large cloud server networks in enterprise-class infrastructure.
The Adaptec Smart Storage OpenStack tool consists of three components: 1) Metal as a Service (MaaS) plug-in, a bare metal deployment tool provided by the cloud industry leader and Ubuntu creator Canonical Ltd.; 2) Modeling with Canonical’s Juju A scripted service formula (charm) created by the tool that allows users to remotely deploy Adaptec ARCCONF in any type of cloud environment so that the Juju dashboard can be used to remotely configure and manage adapters and connected devices; 3) OpenStack Horizon graphical user interface (GUI) A plugin that allows users to identify, configure, and easily manage Adaptec intelligent storage standard adapters and custom embedded solutions.
Andrew Dieckmann, vice president of marketing for Microchip’s Data Center Solutions (DCS) business unit, said: “Microchip is pleased to be able to release new open source tools that simplify the integration of our Adaptec intelligent storage solutions into the OpenStack software-defined infrastructure. This unique offering will enhance our customers’ ability to quickly and efficiently deploy new storage facilities within the market-leading OpenStack open source cloud server management framework.”
Danny Carreno, senior manager of ecosystem development and operations at the OpenStack Foundation, said: “The $6.1 billion OpenStack market continues to grow at double-digit rates worldwide, covering almost every conceivable use case in public and private clouds. Including containers, VMs, and bare metal. The open infrastructure space that is driving this growth is growing in itself, and companies such as Microchip have integrated projects like OpenStack Horizon Dashboard to support Microchip’s Adaptec range of storage controller solutions. Investment in the architectural arena makes it easier for operators to quickly configure, deploy, and manage storage resources in data centers supported by OpenStack.”
For more than 30 years, Adaptec storage adapters have been a trusted solution for customers. Microchip’s newest line of intelligent storage products includes Adaptec SAS / SATA series adapters and IC solutions that deliver enterprise-class reliability and performance, feature-rich management and a competitive total cost of ownership.
