Allegro Introduces Three-Phase BLDC Driver IC A89331

Allegro MicroSystems (hereinafter referred to as Allegro), a global leader in power and sensing solutions for motion control and energy efficient systems, announces the world’s first three-phase BLDC driver IC A89331 with integrated power loss brake (PLB) This code-free, sine wave sensorless fan driver is designed to increase energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption and data center costs. The new PLB feature also increases data center security and reduces bill of materials (BoM) costs.

Andy Wang, Allegro’s product line engineering manager, explained: “We introduced the new product A89331 to respond directly to the server market trends and needs. The A89331 is the smallest and most performance-oriented for the server and data center cooling fan market. Excellent solution.”

Build a greener and more energy efficient data center

When a server fan fails or is damaged, air backflow causes it to rotate in the opposite direction. Other fans must increase the workload to compensate for the resulting reverse airflow, which increases system power consumption.

The A89331 integrates a unique integrated power-off brake that brakes against abnormally operating fans, eliminating the need to dissipate excess power while increasing thermal efficiency, ultimately reducing energy and data center costs.

More simplified solution

To prevent damage to the fan reversal, the traditional solution is to add external circuitry to achieve fan braking, but this solution is not suitable for 1U fan systems. Traditional solutions not only lead to higher cost of BoM, but also reduce efficiency, and require software development, which delays time to market.

The A89331 is the world’s first and only solution that enables simultaneous three-phase BLDC drive and power-off braking in a 1U fan. In addition, Allegro’s proprietary codeless drivers eliminate the need for software development and verification, with the benefits of higher performance, lower BoM cost, smaller PCB area, lower development cost and shorter time to market.

Achieve a safer data center

The A89331’s integrated power-off brake function also stops the fan operation as soon as the system is powered down, avoiding possible power supply damage.

Andy Wang added: “The most important of all these advantages of the A89331 is that it can make server fans run at higher speeds and improve speed control accuracy. The A89331 integrates all the features customers need to meet the market. Demand and help customers improve product performance and operational efficiency.”

The A89331 is available with a trapezoidal wave drive for higher speed (RPM) and improved speed accuracy to ±1.5% at 25°C.

The A89331 has a maximum input voltage rating of 18V and an operating temperature range of -40 to 105°C. It is available in a 28-pin 5mm x 5mm QFN package with an exposed thermal pad (suffix ES) or a 20-pin with exposed thermal pad. TSSOP package (suffix LP). These products are lead free and are 100% matte tin plated leadframes.
