Vietnam Plans to Reduce the Import Tax on Auto Parts

According to the electronic edition of Vietnam economic times on the 16th, in order to ensure the domestic automobile production and assembly enterprises, the Ministry of finance of Vietnam formally reported to the government the plan of reducing the import tax on auto parts, which is expected to be officially implemented next month.

According to Guo Defa, deputy director of the tax department of the Ministry of finance of Vietnam, the import tax will be as high as 30% for the battery, seat and tire and other competitive auto parts that can be produced by domestic enterprises. 15-25% for the transmission system, chassis and body, and 5-10% for the rest. The new tax rate will ensure a selective focus on protecting the domestic priority of encouraging the production of products, while ensuring that the new tax rate is synchronized with the special consumption tax being implemented in Vietnam. The key to the remaining problems is how to classify the spare parts according to different tax rates of 30%, 25%, 20%, 15%, 10% and 5%.

Guo also said that the implementation of a unified tax rate of more than 5% for certain models, especially for trucks with more than 5 tons and buses with more than 30 seats, would suffer losses. At present, the import tax rate of spare parts of these vehicles is lower than 5%. However, in the context of Vietnam’s accession to the world trade organization, it is more important to speed up tax rate adjustment and improve the protection of some domestic products. Otherwise, once the market is opened, some enterprises will face bankruptcy.
